Young Carers supporting people with Dementia

Australia has many children and young people that are relied upon to assist parents or grandparents living with illness or Dementia.

Children and grandchildren caring for family with Dementia have recently been acknowledged by Alzheimer’s Australia.

It is estimated that 78,000 people are living with dementia in Victoria alone; the role often falls upon families to take on the daily responsibilities.

Grandchildren also play an important role in providing emotional support to loved ones living with dementia and often help with looking after siblings, sharing stories and sometimes helping with domestic duties.

ACLS have a specific online course, which educates nurses about the challenges, and issues that can occur for carers, the learning activity is called ‘Carers issues’ and informs learners about the impact of caring on carer quality of life, relationship issues and reducing the burden on carers.

 

Older People and Musculoskeletal Conditions

Tougher action for Elder Abuse in Aged care

After the recent comprehensive study into sexual assault of older women recommended the mandatory licensing of care workers and a review of the aged care standards to encourage and focus on prevention.

The study conducted by researches from La Trobe University, pilule led by Dr Catherine Barrett included surveys and interviews with family members, troche nurses, health police, aged care providers and sexual assault agencies.

The researches said the overall prevalence of sexual assaults of older women aged 65 years and over, occurred in a variety of domestic contexts, settings and relationships and although the authors acknowledge that the majority of sexual assaults occurred outside of institutional care, they are calling for a response from the aged care sector and explain why a prevention strategy is critical.Catherine-Barret-522x350
